Helping Community

A Youth and Family Connect Scholarship helped a talented local girl achieve her dream. Lydia was selected to attend the Summer Intensive Ballet Program at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet in NYC.

Russell Crowe – The local legend and global superstar is an ardent supporter of Youth and Family Connect‘s community projects and initiatives, regularly volunteering his time for YFC, seen here giving us a hand re- netting the area’s basketball courts with local child, Zion.

We’re so happy to have helped young Woolloomooloo local, Des with a Youth and Family Connect scholarship for travel expenses to compete interstate. He’s an exceptional basketballer, lovely kid, and comes from a great family.

Our Mission

Youth and Family Connect are a not for profit registered charity operating in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. We are focused on spearheading unique and refreshing community cultural arts and sporting initiatives, events, and programs as well as providing and delivering fresh baked goods and produce free daily to those in need. Connecting kids, youth, and families and co ordinating other local community service providers, YFC are committed to the alleviation of poverty.

Youth and Family Connect  have successfully created events and community programs in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo and chair the Woolloomooloo Working Group Committee providing guidance and a platform for the likes of, BaptistCare, CatholicCare, C3Cares, Save The Children, Kings Cross Police LAC, Souths Cares, Charity Bounce and the PCYC as well as the community arm of The Art Gallery Of NSW and prestigious gallery, Artspace. Our free monthly community barbecues –  Woolloomoolove, held on the last Friday of each month and our events and programs are an invaluable opportunity for these bodies to actively engage community members directly in a collaborative spirit. In addition it promotes the reactivation of the area’s beautiful, but underutilised public spaces while inviting families from other communities to attend and enjoy these spaces and celebrate our diversity with us.

Unlike other service providers operating in the area, many of our committee members live within the community. Reflecting YFC’s advocacy for maintaining a socio economically diverse inner city population, committee members come from equally diverse professions and economic backgrounds. From solicitors, school teachers, choreographers, and designers to real estate advisors and investment managers.

Although we initiate creative projects, our primary mission is to alleviate poverty. We readily offer help to community members in need of any type of assistance. From simple services such as free baked goods and produce delivered and shuttled group grocery shopping trips (which can make a world of difference for the older, the economically disadvantaged, or the less mobile as many in our community do not own vehicles), to one on one assistance with community members suffering from substance abuse issues and other forms of hardship. We are always ready to lend an ear or a hand and assist in  linking them to the most appropriate service and to aid in coordinating a plan of action where needed. Empowering the community’s youth and honouring Woolloomooloo’s rich sporting history, YFC also proudly sponsor the local touch footie team – The Woolloomooloo Warriors.

YFC’s longer term goals are to engage and connect community members from both sides of the economic divide and provide pathways for those less advantaged in our community through partnerships with local businesses. Offering prospects for fulfilling livelihoods and life experiences, successful shorter term opportunities have been generated in the periods community members have been actively involved in the creative process of YFC’s projects; from developmental stage to execution.

Countless studies have shown creative thinking is a valuable asset that can be employed in any field aiding in the ability to problem solve or think outside the box. Utilising creativity as a means to explore expression and potential, our initiatives empower individuals and groups who take part in these projects. They run the spectrum of creative mediums – from dance, music, and film, to design and traditional painting and sculpture, as well as modern multimedia and sport. These activities impact outlooks, raise self esteem, and enable participants to employ these thought processes in their everyday lives.

Driven by idealistic and egalitarian principles, Youth and Family Connect intend to revive a traditional village spirit with which to infuse our modern inner city communities. YFC will endeavour to become an example of a balanced and connected urban populace with its members united in pride of place and mutual respect. Celebrating our diversity across the most varied of demographics, YFC is a vibrant, living, breathing jewel in the heart of the city.
